Cabin A is the first in a series of contemporary cabins, all linked together by the link they maintain with the St. Lawrence. It is located in the Falaise area, in Petite-Rivière-St-François, near the Le Massif ski resort, in the magnificent Charlevoix region. Access to the site is via a winding path. The trees provide privacy and the sloping terrain provides a view of the river.
Discreet and sober on approach, the interior is inviting and warm. The St. Lawrence River is revealed and the landscape unfolds through living spaces. It is a gathering place where families and friends can feast or contemplate in peace.
The architectural and graphic signature of this project is inspired by the maritime heritage and tends to pay tribute to the pilots of the St. Lawrence. The letter "A" was chosen by the correlation between the angled shape of the vessel and the "A" in the nautical alphabet known to all pilots. In this unique project, architecture and graphics inspire each other and push the experience of nature retreat to a higher level.
References to naval architecture are present but subtle. Formally, the gable roof extends to the ground on the street side. The cabin seems to have anchored to the ground so as not to drift. The triangulated shapes obtained subtly recall the sails or rope of ships. On approach, the cabin is rather closed in on itself. The entrance is via a gangway and a large crank door invites you to enter the wheelhouse.
The living area is completely glazed over the landscape. The living room is partially separated by a bench seat which folds like the wheelhouse dashboards. The kitchen and the dining room communicate with the large starboard deck. This large terrace offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Inside, the cathedral ceiling rises to take the exterior shape of the cabin. A boat ladder gives access to a secret hiding place in the attic, which will delight little ones. All the rooms are located in the hold, a well-cleared garden level on the wooded lot. This strategy makes it possible to completely free up the level of the wheelhouse to obtain a clear assembly space. The level of the hold gives access to the ground and the spa protected under the bridge.
