This village is a member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Québec. It was once the strategic landing where the great "portages" between the St-Lawrence, Acadia and the Maritimes began. Its rivers where therefore travelled by the First Nations, missionaries and trappers alike.
It is now a known tourist destination, located vis-à-vis the Saguenay fjord where the whales come to roam in abundance, and can be admired from shore and in touring crafts. Notre-Dame-du-Portage harbours a reputable spa and health center and an outdoor public salt-water pool. At the end of a restful day, you can enjoy a spectacular sunset over the St-Laurence river, classified among the most beautiful in the world.
